BYOD Policy Enforcement Gets the Dilbert Treatment (video)

Has it come to this?

BYOD has reached a tipping point in the enterprise, with 74% of companies reporting in a recent survey by Osterman Research that they will have a BYOD program and policy this year. Half already do.

This short clip from Dilbert illustrates (with humor of course) one of the draconian measures that IT security departments might have used to enforce compliance before the arrival of this brave new world. Who doesn’t love Dilbert? That bespectacled engineer everyman with the gravity defying neckwear. He speaks for all that’s wrong with corporate bureaucracy, and has reached near mythic oracle status here in Silicon Valley.

Now while your company may not deploy giant robotic arms (or is that Spiderman’s nemesis Dr. Octopus?) to violently ensure that end users enroll their devices in your Mobile Device Management – that’s not the point. The Osterman survey found that a surprisingly low number of organizations – only about 20% – can detect data leakage or compliance violations from company devices. Only a third of those surveyed are planning to add this capability over the next year. In fact the top 5 problems rated “very serious” with managing enterprise workforce mobility are all related to data security and access security concerns. Less surprising is the fact that the top 2 reasons corporate IT has surrendered to BYOD are both user satisfaction driven: either to increase worker productivity or to keep employees happy by permitting them to bring their own devices to work.

Looks like Dilbert ultimately won the day. As a result, let’s hope the MDM robot doesn’t turn on its master.
